TMJ, C-Spine & Intro to Cranial Techniques

This course reviews the functional anatomy of the temporo-mandibular joint (TMJ) and covers muscle, joint, neural and exercise techniques to assess and treat TMJ disorders. Typical problems of the TMJ seen clinically will be addressed. You will learn a system of assessment using upper and lower limb neural testing to identify if the TMJ is influencing pain that is distal to this specific joint.

The course will also cover an introduction to craniosacral therapy techniques, and how these techniques can be used to treat TMJ disorders, headaches, whiplash injury, and other musculoskeletal problems. Integrating TMJ, neural testing and cranial techniques to treat cervical spine conditions will complete the course.

Topics include

  • An overview of TMJ anatomy; joint, disc, ligaments, and muscles
  • Ideal mechanics of the TMJ and typical clinical presentations
  • The clicking jaw
  • A locked jaw
  • Splints
  • Working with your dental referrers
  • Typical radiological presentations

You will learn

  • Self- assessment of TMJ
  • Exercises for TMJ alignment and stability
  • How to manage a locked jaw
  • Dynamic neural glides that are influenced by TMJ dysfunction
  • O1/C1/C2 myodural interconnections influencing upper c/spine musculature
  • C5/C6/C7 mobilisation in a functional position to assess the influence on TMJ
  • Techniques for downtraining SCM and upper trapezius
  • Eye/neck stability exercises using COR and VOR
  • Balance exercises to improve neck flexor and extensor strength
  • TMJ Muscle releases and joint mobilisation – external and internal
  • Neural testing to eliminate contribution of upper or lower limb neural tension on TMJ pain
  • Anatomy review of cranial bones, sutures, foramens, and introduction to cranial techniques

This course is ideal for any Practitioner who is not currently assessing and treating TMJ. It is particularly ideal for newer Physio Graduates and for those wanting to expand and broaden their referral base.

This is what our students say:

Excellent clinical relevance – lots of clearly related clinical skills learned. Good balance of theory & practical.” – Joan L

“Great course. Francine was not just a great teacher but very open to all questions I had.” – Yoon Y (My Health Hub)

“It’s been absolutely transformative for my physio practice. With anything neck, jaw, lower back, nerve-y related I literally feel like someone turned down the difficulty setting..”  Sam B

Pre Reading and Helpful Clips will be sent to you two weeks prior so that the focus in the course is on the Practical Sessions.

ADDITIONAL BONUS: you will receive a copy of Francine’s most recent release: The Back Pain Handbook E-book, as part of enrolling in this Course. It covers many of the Topics and neural and cervical spine exercises that are covered in this Course.
